History of SLAOMS / COMSSL

Sri Lanka Association of the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (SLAOMS) is the national association which represents the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery profession. SLAOMS was Initiated in 1998 and had its inaugural meeting in 1991, with its founder president Professor N A de S Amaratunga.

SLAOMS with its modest beginning as a small professional body and had made tremendous advances in the last few years. The vast strides we have witnessed in the field have taken our profession from its humble beginnings to the position of being one of the most important professional bodies in this country. This makes our task more significant.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has developed as a major branch of dentistry and its scope at present is the surgical management of diseases of the mouth and the maxillofacial region which is defined  as the part of the face that is supported by the jaws. Malignancies, trauma and developmental anomalies which are common in this anatomical region in Sri Lanka come under the purview of this specialty. In the highly competitive world of surgery, Maxillofacial Surgeons are held in high esteem. Their skill and erudition have earned them the accolades that make us proud to be maxillofacial surgeons and hold our heads high in the medical world.

In the field of postgraduate education SLAOMS has a vital role to play. This is very important for the future development of the specialty. This has not been fulfilled to date and remains a challenge for the future leaders of the profession. It must take its place in the postgraduate education system like all other medical specialties. The parent body of the dental profession must recognize this imperative need and work towards this goal which when realized would in turn enhance the image of dentistry in Sri Lanka and give postgraduate dental education a tremendous boost.

SLAOMS is recognized internationally and plays it role in the global scene and has made links with many other national and regional associations. It is a member of The International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS) and Asian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS).  This status it has earned through hard work by its members and the devoted service to the sick and the infirm. Its members have been engaged in collaborative programmes with many other centers abroad.

The objectives of the Association are.

  • To provide and sustain access to safe and effective care in Sri Lanka by advancing, promoting, and protecting the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
  • To advocate the interests of oral and maxillofacial surgeons and patients in dialogues with governmental and non-governmental bodies.
  • To develop the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery in Sri Lanka via education, training, and research.

Sri Lanka Association of the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (SLAOMS) underwent name change on 25th July, 2020 to “College of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons of Sri Lanka’ to keep in line with the further development in the field of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and specially with the establishment of the new Board of Study in ‘Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery’ at the Post Graduate institute of Medicine (PGIM).
